Woodcut is the sixteenth studio album from Big Big Train and a significant milestone in the band's catalogue, marking their first full-length conceptual work. Written and recorded by an international line-up spanning England, Scotland, Italy, the USA, Sweden, and Norway, the album presents a unified narrative centred on The Artist -a character navigating inner conflict and imagination through a symbolic, woodcut-inspired world. Musically, Woodcut is a more band-focused statement than its immediate predecessors, with all seven members contributing across its 66-minute runtime. Alberto Bravin takes on lead production duties, shaping an album that balances scale and intimacy, with long-form compositions that feel expansive without excess. Longtime band architect Gregory Spawton frames the story as deliberately untethered from a fixed era, allowing the album's themes to remain open-ended and interpretive. The album's visual identity is integral to the release, featuring a commissioned black-and-white woodcut print by Dorset-based artist Robin Mackenzie, reproduced here with an embossed gatefold sleeve.
