Originally released in 1969, Cloud Nine marked a decisive shift in the Temptations' sound, opening the door to the psychedelic soul direction that would become one of Motown's most important late-1960s developments. Produced by Norman Whitfield and driven by ambitious arrangements, layered percussion and the playing of the Funk Brothers, the album pushed beyond established Motown formulas without losing the vocal strength at the centre of the group. The title track became a major statement of intent, while "Run Away Child, Running Wild" expanded the band's reach even further with a more dramatic, extended form. It also stands as Motown's first Grammy-winning album, giving Cloud Nine a significant place in the label's history as well as in the Temptations' catalogue.
