With Meliora, Ghost fully realized their theatrical, genre-blurring visionmelding heavy metal, pop melodicism, and occult imagery into their most cohesive and accessible album yet. Where earlier records leaned more heavily into retro doom aesthetics, Meliora introduced slicker production and catchier songwriting without sacrificing the bands signature eerie atmosphere. The result is a darkly grandiose statement, filled with irony, menace, and hooks that feel almost too catchy for a band dressed like Satanic clergy.
From the thunderous opening of Spirit to the anthemic sweep of Cirice (which earned the band a Grammy), Meliora is packed with standout moments. From the Pinnacle to the Pit rides a grinding bassline and sinister groove, while He Is floats in as an unexpectedly beautiful, almost spiritual ballad. The contrast between the bands devilish themes and their polished, almost ABBA-esque pop sensibility gives Meliora its magnetic tension. Its both a parody and a celebration of rock spectacleand it works brilliantly.
