Originally released in 1972, Dogon A.D. is one of the most distinctive and influential recordings in the history of avant-garde jazz. Alto saxophonist Julius Hemphill recorded the album in St. Louis with a stripped-down trio featuring Abdul Wadud on cello and Philip Wilson on drums, creating a sound that was radically different from the piano- and bass-driven jazz ensembles of the time. The absence of a traditional bass is crucial: Waduds cello anchors the music with earthy, resonant grooves that feel closer to a ritual pulse than conventional jazz walking lines.
